| Different ways of addressing black and minority ethnic (BME) older people’s housing with care needs are highlighted in a recently launched ‘Better housing’ briefing paper. This is one of a series of ‘Better housing and better health’ briefing papers produced by the Race Equality Foundation, which are part of a programme of work to improve health, housing and social care provision to BME communities. Each paper provides an overview of the key messages; evidence-based examples of good practice; lists of useful resources; and signposts to further reading. |

| The Lifting the Burdens Task Force is calling on councils and partnerships to send in evidence of any central government activity which is holding back local economic development and regeneration. This applies to the areas of: effective place shaping; funding mechanisms; strategic infrastructure; and skills and worklessness. The deadline for submissions is Friday 23 May. |

| The lessons from the West Durham Rural Pathfinder have been published by Natural England in a series of case studies. The West Durham Rural Pathfinder was part of the national rural delivery pathfinder programme and focussed on improving quality of life for people in West Durham by: supporting vibrant and sustainable communities; giving communities a stronger ‘voice’; and understanding and responding to needs. |

| Funding for New Deal for Communities in 2008-09 confirmed | Communities and Local Government | 10/04/08 |
| Communities Minister Baroness Andrews has announced that £230m had been allocated among the New Deal for Communities Partnerships (NDC) for spending in 2008-09. This funding will take the NDC programme into the final years of the government approved 10-year delivery plans. A recent study measured the impact of NDCs on their local area between 2001-02 and 2005-06. Key findings included: an 11 percentage point increase in the number of children gaining five or more A*-C GCSEs; increased satisfaction with the NDC area as a place to live; and a seven percentage point increase in the number of people who reported feeling part of their community. |

| Three new NDC evaluation reports published | Communities and Local Government | 08/04/08 |
| The government has assisted deprived neighbourhoods through the New Deal for Communities (NDC) Programme, which was launched in 1998. The programme is designed to encourage the delivery of local services in a coordinated way to meet local needs, and aims to narrow the gap between the 39 renewal areas and the rest of the country. Communities and Local Government has this week published three new reports as part of the national evaluation of the programme. |

| European cities can provide valuable insights into how to tackle deep-seated urban problems, such as the regeneration of run-down industrial areas, according to new researched published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. This research is based primarily on case studies of major urban regeneration schemes in Gothenburg (Sweden), Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and Roubaix (in Metropolitan Lille in France) and draws conclusions for UK policy and practice. |

| New research into social enterprise networks published | Cabinet Office | 01/04/08 |
| The Office of the Third Sector has published a new report which looks into social enterprise networks in England. The research stems from a commitment given in the Social Enterprise Action Plan, which highlighted that peer group support from businesses operating in a similar environment can be an effective way of supporting social enterprises. The research, conducted by Rocket Science, identifies national, regional, sub-regional and local networks and makes recommendations how gaps might be addressed. |

| The government has launched a discussion paper intended to stimulate a debate about what works best in supporting people to get into work and get on in work. It reviews the evidence relating to helping adults to progress in work. It also highlights ambiguities and gaps in this evidence and suggests issues for further analysis. |

| Public attitudes to child poverty – new report published | DWP | 28/03/08 |
| The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has published the results of a survey which aimed to examine public attitudes to child poverty in Britain today. Key findings from the survey show that: 41 per cent of respondents thought there was very little real child poverty in Britain today; 53 per cent thought there was quite a lot; most respondents thought that child poverty in Britain had increased or stayed the same over the last decade, and most thought it would increase or stay the same over the next ten years; and just over half (57 per cent) of respondents thought an unemployed single mother living solely on state benefits would be hard up or really poor. |

| Results of England’s local environmental quality survey published | ENCAMS | 06/03/08 |
| The Local Environment Quality Survey of England is carried out annually for Defra by ENCAMS, the organisation behind the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, and monitors a representative sample of 54 local authorities across England to give a national and regional picture of how clean our streets are. The results of the latest survey have been published and show that graffiti tags and dog fouling have decreased since last year, but cigarette ends are still the most widespread kind of litter on our streets - found in 78% of sites surveyed - and fast food litter remains at the same level as last year. |

| A Joseph Rowntree Foundation report on street policing of problem drug users, from the perspective of drug users and policing professionals, has recently been published. The study provides important insights into policing practices and draws out implications for policy development, ahead of the Government’s new drugs strategy which will be launched in 2008. The report: describes the organisation of street policing of problem drug users; examines the nature and purpose of street encounters between the police and drug users; analyses drug users’ experiences of policing; and considers the implications of street policing for drug users and local communities. |

| Third sector organisations are invited to apply to become local funders for Grassroots Grants, the new multi-million pound funding programme. | Positive Destinations is a new grant programme from BBC Children in Need and The Hunter Foundation. Funding is available for projects working to ensure that children and young people achieve a positive and sustained future in terms of education, employment or training. The programme expects to fund projects working with children and young people of any age up to and including 18, ranging from pre-school to primary, secondary and further education. The deadline for applications is 30 March 2008. |

| Lifetime homes, lifetime neighbourhoods - new housing strategy | Communities and Local Government | 25/02/08 |
| The Government is today publishing a major new housing strategy giving older people greater choice and addressing the challenges of an ageing population. Hazel Blears and Housing Minister Caroline Flint will announce a range of measures to bring about a fundamental change in the way future communities are built alongside an expansion in existing support available to older people that will help them to live safely and, where they choose, independently in their own homes. |

| A guide that will help voluntary groups work better with hard-to-reach beneficiaries has been launched by homeless support charity Look Ahead. The handbook for the charity’s customer training programme is intended to give those working with vulnerable people a free toolkit. The programme and the guide are based on Look Ahead’s experience of working with more than 120 vulnerable people, including homeless people, children and teenagers. |
