Documents that have been written specifically
for renewal.net have a little renewal.net logo embedded in the document icon:
.
For example, all Overviews and most Case Studies and Toolkits have been specially commissioned for renewal.net, while Research material and Policy Guidance documents have usually been collected externally.
There are several ways to navigate renewal.net.

The image above is a screen shot taken
from the home page. Please note the area marked with indicator (1).
This navigation bar running horizontally across the page displays links
to the areas of housing & environment, worklessness, education, crime,
health and local economies. These are the main 6 areas of the site and
are referred to as themes. Each of these themes has a sub-theme
and a sub-sub-theme, representing a three level navigation hierarchy.

For example, when you select the housing
& environment theme the second level of navigation becomes visible.
(See the image above). You can still navigate to any of the first level
links, but the fact that they are shaded indicates that you are currently browsing the second level.
Note also that the housing & environment link is highlighted in blue
to indicate that you are currently located in that section.

When you select a second level link the
third level becomes visible as in the image above. These three images
demonstrate the 3-level hierarchy of renewal.net.

The image above shows the third level of
the hierarchy. Note the blue highlighted areas. These indicate your path,
i.e. they show that you clicked on the housing & environment theme,
and then they highlight the choices you made at the second and third levels.
See the site map to clearly see the full hierarchy all on one page.
You can also navigate through renewal.net
from the two links on the left hand side named "neighbourhood renewal"
and "how to
"

This navigation works essentially the same way as that for the six themes described above.

(See image, point 1.) To use the standard search tool,
type the word you want to search for into the text box and click on the
search button. Your search results will be displayed below with the most
relevant at the top. The results can be narrowed by selecting 'Limit results
to region' (see image, point 1a.) and/or by selecting a document type (see
image, point 1b.). Now click on the search button to display the new results.

When using the more advanced 'search options' tool (see the link on the navigation bar at the top of the window) you can specify as few
or as many of the fields as you need. Type one or more words into the 'search
for' text box (see image, point 2.). This word / these words will be searched
for throughout all of the documents on renewal.net. If you tick the 'exact
match' box (see image, point 3.), the search will be for that exact phrase. If you do not tick the 'exact phrase', then the search will
find any document which includes any of the words you typed. If you tick
the "only include renewal.net documents" box (see image, point
4.), the search results will only display documents written specifically
for renewal.net.

Below the 'search for' box is a
dropdown menu labelled 'theme' (see image, point 5.). You can search for results in any one
specific theme. If you are not sure what theme the document
you are looking for would come under, or if you want to search for documents
throughout renewal.net then it is best to select 'all'.
Below the 'theme' dropdown (see image, point 7.) is a box for specifying the
'document type'. Again select 'all' if you are unsure what document
type to select. This option is helpful if, for instanc,e you were only interested
in case study documents.
To the right of 'document type' (see image, point 8.)
is the 'created' drop down, which is useful if you require only recently written documents.
The last dropdown below 'document type' (see image, point
9.) is the 'region'. If the document you are looking for is specific to a
region then you can specify this here.
Once you have made your selections click the 'search'
button (see image, point 10.) to the right. Your results will be displayed
in decreasing order of relevance, i.e. with the most relevant displayed at the top.
You can preview the details of a document
by clicking 'preview' to the right of its title. Clicking 'open', will
download the document from renewal.net to your PC.
At the top of your search results (see image, point 13.)
there is an area called 'Possible related web pages on renewal.net'. These are links to theme pages
within renewal.net that match your search.
